Wednesday, Sept.

 Highlights:

• We played Go Fish with the Power of 10 math cards
• We also practiced making decreasing patterns. There were patterns that decreased by 1, 2, 3, and 5
• In writing, we wrote about why leaves in the fall lose their colour
• In music, we learned the words to Oh Canada
• We had our first Lockdown practice. Our class did an excellent job of staying quiet until the police officer opened our door

Monday, Sept. 21

 

September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Tuesday, September 29th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day. 

Students will be engaging in learning throughout the week to honor this important day. Through read alouds and learning tasks, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. 

Tuesday, Sept.22

Highlights:

• Today is the Fall Equinox which means there are equal hours of day and night
• We went outside for a leaf hunt and then came inside to trace our leaf, measure it, and describe the texture
• We talked about Orange Shirt Day coming up and the feelings that kids SHOULD have at school
• We continued with our math centres that focus on repeating patterns, increasing patterns, and patterns in nature

Thursday, Sept. 17

Highlights:

• We have been learning about our Canadian Hero, Terry Fox and today was the Terry Fox Run. Did you know that the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over 1 billion dollars for cancer research since 1980! Just like Terry Fox, we set a goal for how many laps we wanted to run today. Ask me how many laps I ran around the field.

Wednesday, Sept. 16

Highlights:

• We talked about Terry Fox and did a guided drawing of him
• We used different manipulatives to make increasing patterns
• We did a body movement activity to practice learning north, south, east and west
• Sophia shared her cat clock from her 'Me Bag' today

Tuesday, Sept.15

Highlights:

• We listened to The Dot by Peter Reynolds & wrote about a time that made us nervous
• We made different patterns using different types of dots
• We made a graph of different circle shapes 
• The Dot Challenge had us thinking of all the different ways to turn things into a circle
• We had music class and used scarves and eggs to move to the beat
• We played a fun game in gym that was similar to dodge ball
• More students in our class shared some favourite items from their 'Me Bag'

Reminders:

• Please bring money for the Terry Fox Run. We are trying to collect a toonie for every student at our school

 Today we:

• did a guided drawing of a puppy and wrote sentences about it
• chose just right books to practice reading to ourselves
• went to music
• drew repeating patterns using emoji's
• learned about the map of Canada by drawing a different symbol on each province
